"It's just us, right?"
Hannah walks to her. She touches her cheek and finds her eyes. There is a desperate light hanging on her pupils. A flicker of passion, a flicker of shame.
"It's just us."

i love when i read a book that i wasn’t expecting to love and it ends up being a 6 star read. like i obviously only read books i think ill enjoy, but i don’t expect them all to be perfection, and loving a book i only expected to like is such a vastly different experience than loving a book i expected to love.
like i knew id love Sunburn by Chloe michelle howarth, same with these violent delights by micah nemerever.
but then with ‘i’ll give you the sun’ by jandy nelson. i’d read another book of theirs in middle school and didn’t like it, so i wasn’t sure i’d like it, but GOD did it blow me out of the park. i read it while on vacation (it helps that it was the best vacation i’ve ever had) with my sister and i couldn’t put it down! we took a 10 hour bus & 2 hour train going home and i read it the whole way when i wasn’t sleeping. except for the last few chapters because they made me bawl my eyes out and i wasn’t about to do that in public! it was truly such a magical and raw book about two siblings, and we know how i feel about sibling relationships.
and then there’s ‘her name in the sky’ by kelly quindlen, i had only seen it recommended by one person so i didn’t have high hopes, but again it fucking wrecked me. it was one of the first times i read a sapphic book and felt truly connected to a character. i loved the way it talked about being religious and queer and how confusing and saddening that can be when the people who are supposed to love you tell you who you are is wrong. obviously this isn’t a niche or unrepresented topic, but id read other books with this same overarching theme that i didnt connect to, so it was so special to me.
point being, i love when a book surprises me. the opposite issue, one of the worst feelings, is reading a book you thought you’d love and disliking it. but that’s all part of the fun of reading i guess!!

I just finished “her name in the sky”
I don’t think I can ever move on. I have never had a book cause me so much pain and so much happiness. but mostly pain because OH MY GOD
I sobbed so much during that book and also had multiple seizures where I literally jumped out of my chair or bed or whatever in happiness
that book was amazing and I highly recommend but warning: I did need to take multiple breaks from it because it made my heart hurt so bad

This book is so good wtf
But while the whole earth prepares for spring, Hannah feels a great anxiety in her heart, for something dangerous has grown in her, something she never planted or even wanted to plant.
It’s there. She knows it’s there. If she’s truthful with herself, she’s probably known all along. But now, as the days grow longer and the Garden District grows greener, she can actually see it. It has sprung up at last, and it refuses to be unseen.
She tells herself it’s passing. It’s temporary. It’s intensified only because she’s a senior and all of her emotions are heightened. It’s innocent. It’s typical for a girl her age. It’s no more or no less of a feeling than everyone else has had at 17.
But deep down, deep below the topsoil of her heart, she knows it’s not.
Still, she pushes it down inside of her, buries it as far as it can go, suffocates it in the space between her stomach and her heart. She tells herself that she is stronger, that she can fight it, that she has control. That no one has to know.
I can ignore it, she thinks. I can refuse to look at it. I can stomp on it every time it springs up within me.
So she lies to herself that everything is normal. That she is normal. She carries herself through the end of the school week by refusing to acknowledge it. By refusing to align her heart with the growing sunlight and the nurturing heat and the flowering plants and the tall, proud trees.

Im traveling rn and i listened to Your Name In The Sky by Kelly Quindlen and as someone who had a vagely similar experience the one year I went to catholic school, it almost made me cry haha. Its so real but it also feels like trauma incarnite. Its like almost everything that couldve gone wrong did go wrong. At least until like the last few chapters. Not sure how to feel about it, but it made me feel sad
